My poem The Fruit Stall has been awarded 'highly recommended' in the 2024 Hay Writers’ Circle Poetry Competition. Many thanks to judge Susan Evans who described it as "...a tremendously transporting and uplifting poem, with its high-energy narration, juicy word play and bursts of colour from Bangalore!"
This follows my poem Brasserie Depuis Ma Fenêtre (From My Window) winning second prize in the 2023 Hay Writers’ Circle Poetry Competition. Many thanks to the generous insight of judge Alex Josephy, who wrote:
“A clever idea, sustained throughout with inventive wit. This has made me smile every time I’ve read it. The descriptive details are very well observed, and it’s laced with little verbal jokes. The succession of small telling details adds up to a vibrant portrait of a place, and of an observer’s point of view.”
"The best books I have read always end with me tearing up and smiling and sighing all at once. It means that the book has gone under the skin of a chattering editor and critic, stilled the voices, and stayed. Thank you for this book, Jon, and for all the lessons in loving and healing."
